April Meeting Report

The Region V April meeting was held at the Fort Worth Zoo on Tuesday, April 15, 2008. Angie Harvey and Wayde Hutcheson of the Fowlkes, Norman, and Associates landscape firm of Fort Worth led the group on a tour of the "Texas Wild" exhibit. Fowlkes Norman does the maintenance, irrigation, and all landscaping at the Fort Worth Zoo, and were kind enough to give fellow region members an after hours, behind-the-scenes look at their efforts. Region V appreciates the sponsorship of our meeting by Fowkles Norman and the after-hours tour given by Angie and Wayde. James Wilhite, Chairman-elect of TNLA for 2008-09 and owner of Wilhite Landscape in Tyler, joined us for the tour and gave a presentation on the value of certification and using the educational tools that TNLA offers to member firms. Tracy Bryant, owner of Weed Terminator in Arlington and Chairman of Region V, presented a plaque to Bobby Spence, last year's Region V Chair in recognition of Bobby's leadership and service in guiding the region through the past year. The evening was concluded with a drawing for the Whiz-Q attendance award and we finally had a winner. Tim Runte donated his $175 award for being at the February, March, and April meetings to the TNLA-PAC fund, so our thanks to Tim and to the Whiz-Q group for the award. We'll start over with the attendance award at the May meeting with $25 in the kitty.

February Meeting Report

Seville Farms hosted the February monthly meeting for Region 5 of TNLA. Mark Clemmons, Head Grower, and Joe Santana, General Manager led the the tour of the facilities and discussed some of the product being produced at the facility. Seville has also worked with other growers and retailers to use their facility as a 'cross-docking' operation so that smaller orders can be combined and sent to the retailer. Seville has grown into one of the larger greenhouse producers in the last few years and continues to grow with a new facility being added in the Schulenberg area for this year. Mark and Joe gave a brief history of their organization and talked about Seville being one of a very few growers that can now claim Veriflora status. Veriflora is a certification program that recognizes growers that produce in an environmentally and socially responsible manner and meet the highest standards for freshness and quality.

There was not a winner in the Whiz-Q attendance drawing for February so the pot goes to $150 for the March meeting. To be eligible for the money attendance is required for the previous 3 region meetings.

The Board of Directors for Volunteer Service honors the late David Bowden for his service to the residents of the Denton State School. David hosted the Wild Game Feast for Region Five of TNLA at his business, Bowden's Guaranteed Hydromulch, each November. All proceeds generated from the sales of raffle tickets went towards the special projects and needs at the State School. The 2007 Wild Game Feast produced a $15,000 donation to the Denton State School from Region 5. Neil Sperry, President of the Denton State School Board, led the memorial services for Lori Bowden and Tim Neal of Bowden's Guaranteed Hydromulch, the Board of Directors for Volunteer Services at the Denton State School, State School staff, and other guests.
